Japanese Gym Challenge (1999): all 98 cards with PSA prices — Blaine's Charizard and Sabrina's Gengar

Sixth in the complete-list series: Gym Expansion vol. 2, Challenge from the Darkness, known overseas as Japanese Gym Challenge. It covers the remaining four Kanto Gym Leaders and adds Rocket’s Mewtwo, and it holds several of the most collected cards of the whole gym era.

What is it?

• Released on 25 June 1999. The Japanese name is ジム拡張第2弾 闇からの挑戦.
• 98 cards: 75 Pokémon and 23 Trainers. No Energy cards.
• The main owners are Sabrina, Blaine, Giovanni and Koga, plus Rocket’s Pokémon. A handful of cards belong to the first set’s leaders: Erika’s Venusaur, Lt. Surge’s Raichu, Misty’s Poliwrath and Brock’s Dugtrio among them.
• 16 holos. Fifteen Pokémon: Erika’s Venusaur, Koga’s Beedrill, Giovanni’s Nidoking, Blaine’s Charizard, Blaine’s Arcanine, Blaine’s Moltres, Giovanni’s Gyarados, Lt. Surge’s Raichu, Rocket’s Zapdos, Sabrina’s Alakazam, Sabrina’s Gengar, Rocket’s Mewtwo, Giovanni’s Machamp, Giovanni’s Persian and Koga’s Ditto. Plus one Trainer, Giovanni.
• Two oddities: Imakuni?’s Doduo, and _____’s Chansey, whose owner’s name is left blank for you to write in.
• The 23 Trainers include the Gym Leaders themselves (Sabrina, Blaine, Giovanni, Koga) and Gym cards such as Saffron City Gym, Cinnabar City Gym, Viridian City Gym and Fuchsia City Gym.
• Three names appear twice as distinct cards: Koga’s Koffing, Koga’s Pidgey and Giovanni’s Meowth. Each is listed separately here.
• Cards are unnumbered; Pokémon are ordered by Pokédex number.

Highlights

• Blaine’s Charizard has the largest PSA population in the set. As the Gym Leader Charizard it sits next to the Base Set and Team Rocket versions in many collections.
• Sabrina’s Gengar is graded almost as often, and its PSA 10 count is close behind.
• Rocket’s Mewtwo and Rocket’s Zapdos are the Team Rocket cards of this set and are often collected together with Rocket’s Moltres from Gym Heroes.
• Erika’s Venusaur, Blaine’s Moltres and Sabrina’s Alakazam complete the six most-graded cards. Sabrina’s Alakazam stands out for its high share of PSA 10s.

Reading the prices

• Where a name appears twice, the prices are separate too. Check the level and HP before you open the card’s price page.
• No variant print exists, so same card, same grade is directly comparable.
• PSA 10 / PSA 9 below are the median of the latest confirmed sales (up to five).
