Japanese Promo (1996–2001): all 138 cards with PSA prices — CoroCoro, tournaments, ANA and Masaki

Published: Oct 20, 2026 · Japanese Promo (1996) · all 138 cards · 0 holos

Hi, this is Bunbun. This column covers the promotional cards: cards that never came in boosters but were given away as magazine inserts, tournament prizes and campaign rewards. Because their origins are so varied, this site groups every old-back promo into a single series and gives each card name its own page.

What is it?

  • The first promos were the Pikachu and Jigglypuff inserted in the November 1996 issue of CoroCoro Comic, released on 15 October 1996, five days before the Base Set. Promos continued through 2001.
  • This site lists 138 cards counted by name: 114 Pokémon, 23 Trainers and 1 Energy. Many names exist in several versions from different sources or in different finishes; counted by version there are 245.
  • They are grouped by source (number of versions in brackets): CoroCoro Comic inserts and contests (55), inserts from Trainers magazine, the Fan Club and other books (40), official tournament and stamp rally prizes (69), other campaigns (20), ANA airline campaigns (8), media inserts such as CDs, games and films (21), the Masaki Communication Evolution campaign (5) and the Neo Premium Files (27).
  • Cards are unnumbered. The list below follows this site’s ordering.

Highlights

  • Pokémon Illustrator: the prize for CoroCoro Comic’s illustration contest and the most famous old-back card of all.
  • No.1 Trainer, No.2 Trainer and No.3 Trainer: official tournament placement prizes, with a different version for each event from 1997 to 2001. All versions are collected on the page for that name.
  • Surfing Pikachu and Flying Pikachu: given out as CoroCoro inserts, stamp rally prizes and ANA campaign cards, and staples among Pikachu promos.
  • Mew: versions include the glossy February 1997 CoroCoro insert, the stamp rally card and the CD insert. The Ancient Mew from the movie pamphlet is treated as a separate card.
  • Omastar, Alakazam, Gengar, Golem and Machamp from the Masaki campaign: the five cards of the 1999 Communication Evolution campaign, often collected as a set.
  • Neo Premium Files: File 1 has the Johto starter lines, File 2 has Charizard, Entei, Umbreon and others, and File 3 has Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi and the three legendary beasts.

Reading the prices

  • Each card page is per name, so all versions of a promo with the same name are pooled. A CoroCoro insert and a tournament prize can differ greatly in price, so check the listing title and the PSA label wording on each sale.
  • PSA 10 / PSA 9 below are the median of the latest confirmed sales (up to five).
  • PSA population data for promos is not available on this site yet. It will be added to each page once ready.
